My 7 favorite Disney songs

I love songs from Disney movies. There I said it.

It occurred to me while I was running errands on a Thursday afternoon. You see, I watch Bunches twice a week -- currently on Tuesdays and Fridays. So on Thursday afternoon, while I’m screaming the lyrics to Frozen's "In Summer" on the way to the grocery store, I couldn’t help but realize that listening to an all-Disney playlist was as much for the little one as it was for me. Afterall, it had been two full days since I saw her, and I was still blasting Disney tunes.

(Don’t worry, we still have our Beyonce days, our Kid Cudi days, and, up until recently for obvious reasons, our Kanye days.)

I remember the excitement I got from building my Disney playlist on Spotify, titled Auntie Rah Rah’s BOMB DISNEY MIX. Sure I could go to a pre-built playlist -- and I tried. But there were too many songs I didn’t care about at all. Not to mention songs I’d never heard before and songs that I never liked in the first place. So I made my own.

And even Bunches’ mom commented one day about how all the songs were good songs. “That’s because I made it,” I said proudly, grinning from ear to ear. Of all the things I’ve done this year, I might be the most proud of this. (That's not true. I'm an adult and I do lots of cool stuff. I swear.)

I’ve also found myself explaining to a 10-month-old baby the missing details of each song as if she’s dying to know.

On Mulan’s “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”: “You see, Bunches, this is the story about a woman who pretends to be a man. So it’s OK that they’re naming all of these things men are supposed to do and be because at the end of the day, a woman did all of it too. And better than everyone else, let’s be honest.”

On The Little Mermaid’s “Kiss the Girl”: “You see, Bunches, the kiss was needed to break the curse. So it’s OK that they’re trying to get the Prince to kiss Ariel, who happens to be mute. But if anyone tries to kiss you and you don’t want to, you say so!”

On Beauty and the Beast’s “Gaston”: “Don’t ever date a man like this. Kthanks.”

On Aladdin’s “One Jump Ahead”: “There’s no way Aladdin knows what the phrase ‘nom de plume’ means. I juuuuust recently learned it, and I’m in my 30s! ...Also be compassionate to people who have less than you.”

Disney as come up with so many amazing, catchy, inspiring songs that I thought I’d share my favorite five songs. But that was too hard. So I added two more to the list. And I could go on and on and on, but every song can’t be your favorite song, right?

Without further ado, here’s my list of my top 7 favorite Disney songs (in no particular order!):

  1. “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” - The Lion King

  2. “Under the Sea” - The Little Mermaid

  3. “Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat” - The Aristocats

  4. “I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song) - The Jungle Book

  5. “Where You Are” - Moana

  6. “When We’re Human” - The Princess and the Frog

  7. “Un Poco Loco” - Coco

I’ve got a good mix of old and new movie songs on my list. Is it me or have the newer Disney movies been stellar?

Anyways, I’d love to hear what your favorite Disney songs are! Drop them in the comments below or sound off on my social media pages.
