Ways to Support Black-Owned Businesses on Juneteenth and Beyond
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history when the last enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. Today, we use June 19th as an opportunity to reflect on our collective past and contribute to a more equitable future. There are many ways to honor and celebrate this day, but let’s focus on supporting Black-owned businesses.
The last couple of years have been rough overall for small businesses, especially Black ones. Most of us are barely staying afloat and barely keeping it together. We work hard for our big dreams, but sometimes working hard just isn’t enough.
I would be crazy if I said asking for or even acknowledging the need for help is easy. It’s not. But if we want to grow and thrive, we can’t do this completely alone. If you’re looking for ways to help and support, I encourage you to read on.
Here’s how you can support us on Juneteenth and beyond:
1. Share Content on Social Media
Social media is a formidable tool for amplifying the voices of Black entrepreneurs. Here's how you can use it to support:
Highlight Black-Owned Businesses: Share posts featuring Black-owned businesses, their stories, and the products or services they offer.
Engage with Their Content: Like, comment, and share posts from Black-owned businesses. Your engagement helps increase their reach and attracts potential customers.
Create Lists and Guides: Compile and share lists of your favorite Black-owned businesses in various categories like food, fashion, beauty, and wellness.
Share Your Previous Purchases: Whether a specific item or a service, don’t forget to share and tag. Word of mouth goes a long way!
(Author’s note: Please don’t let the fact that you may not be able to afford a product or service stop you from sharing and engaging with a business’ content. The more you share or engage, the better the chance that business will still be around when you are ready.)
2. Purchase Products and Services
Your purchasing power can have a significant impact. Here’s how you can contribute:
Shop Online and In-Store: Seek out Black-owned businesses for your shopping needs. Websites like Black Owned Everything, Black Women Owned and Fifteen Percent Pledge are great places to start if you need help finding amazing Black-owned brands.
Try New Products: Use this opportunity to explore new products or services. Whether it’s a skincare product, a delicious meal, or a unique piece of art, buying from Black-owned businesses helps them thrive.
Support Local: If possible, support local Black-owned businesses in your community. This strengthens local economies and fosters community growth.
3. Donate Directly
Monetary support can provide Black-owned businesses with the resources they need to grow and succeed. Here’s how you can contribute:
Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal Donations: Many small businesses and entrepreneurs use platforms like Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal. Donate directly to these businesses to provide immediate support. Click here for a spreadsheet of Black-owned businesses to give directly to.
Crowdfunding Campaigns: Look for crowdfunding campaigns on platforms like GoFundMe or Kickstarter supporting Black-owned businesses and contribute to their fundraising goals.
By intentionally supporting Black-owned businesses, you are celebrating freedom and contributing to a more just and inclusive society.
This Juneteenth, I encourage you to take meaningful, genuine action: Share, purchase, and donate. Every small act of support counts and collectively, we can create lasting change.
